Two officers have been identified by the Metro Police Department as the individuals who allegedly fired their firearms during a shooting that took place on the far east side of Indianapolis early on Sunday morning.

The incident took place in the 9400 block of East Washington Street, close to North Mitthoefer Road, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 24. At the time, two off-duty officers were working security at a neighboring bar while wearing full uniforms. They heard a commotion in the parking lot, which motivated them to take action.

There was a gunfight between the two police and at least one suspect, as stated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). As a result of the shooting, one woman and five males, including the officer, were hospitalized with injuries.

IMPD announced on Friday, March 29, that the officers that were engaged in the shooting were Officer Arturo Barron, who had been with the department for three years, and Officer Joel Cain, who had been with the agency for six years. A threat assessment was carried out by the department, and then the identities were made public in accordance with IMPD protocol.

As part of the regular protocol that the department follows for officers who are involved in an investigation into a shooting, the officers were placed on administrative leave. The civilian victims, according to the police, are two males aged 45 years old, a guy aged 42 years old, and a lady aged 33 years old. The conditions of the victims were classified as “stable” by the police on Sunday.

Not long after the shooting, a guy who was later determined to be the suspect passed away at a nearby hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained. According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office, the deceased individual was identified as Dominique Lamonte Durham Sr., who was 37 years old.

It was stated that the officer who had been shot was discharged from the hospital rather early on Sunday evening. Currently, the Critical Incident Response Team of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police agency is conducting an investigation into the shooting, while the Internal Affairs Unit of the agency is conducting a separate inquiry.

Immediately following the conclusion of the criminal phase of the investigation, a Use of Force Review Board comprised of civilians will conduct an examination into the incident. This review is required for each situation in which a person is subjected to the use of fatal force.
